The Ariki Project is a school leadership and school development initiative which seeks to demonstrate the connection between principal intentions and teacher behaviours and student outcomes. The processes and protocols offered are based around the notion of collecting evidence of practice which is then exposed to collaborative critique. Digital tools and resources for this work are available, on line, and direct facilitation of the project is provided regionally by practicing principals.

It is a stand-alone programme supported by NZPF and NZEI Te Riu Roa for New Zealand's school leaders:

  • who wish to add depth and meaning to teachers’ group meetings;
  • who believe that there is more than one way to reach a goal;
  • who wish to encourage teachers to talk about what they do and why;
  • who wish to demonstrate trust within their leadership practices; and
  • who wish to be able to link their intents with teacher behaviour and student outcomes.

One cycle began in Term 2 2011 and runs until the end of Term 2 2012. Another has begun in Term 1 of 2012. Contact us if you would like to join the project.

At-a-Distance Ariki Module

Over the last two years we have experimented with an At-a-Distance component of the Ariki Project. We are now ready to roll this application out to more participant schools. During March, those principals who have already expressed an interest in this concept will be offered a tutorial complete with an information pack detailing how the process will work. We are happy to include new schools and invite anyone interested to contact us through the “Join Now” page on this site. There is no charge for this introductory material but schools committing to the Project as a consequence will incur our published costs. (See “Costs” on this site.)

Who is this for?

We have two main groups in mind. Schools who wish to join the Ariki Project but are not part of a face-to-face principal’s Ariki cluster and schools who are geographically isolated from other professional interactions.

How will it work?

Participants will be expected to institute the Ariki Processes in their own schools and to this end will be supported by the Regional Directors. Twice a term an interactive computer assisted seminar will be facilitated by Te Ariki Trust from Wellington where participating principals will be able to share and critique the evidence of their work in their own schools with other At-a-Distance colleagues. Participants will be able to join and take part in these sessions from their own offices.

Getting up to speed

Prior to the distance seminars getting under way there will be opportunities for those taking part to both work through the technical aspects via a tutorial and to test their ability with a one-on-one session with a facilitator. Some participants will already be familiar with the Adobe® Acrobat® Connect Pro software that we will be using. Conversations will be managed by a concurrent telephone conference call.
